ABSTRACT

The first computerized information system was based on manual PD2/PD8 system which was used by small number of practitioners. Experience with this system led to the development of more informative and selective information system, prescribing analysis and cost (PACT). There is an insert in the centre of the standard PACT report that is concerned with some important and topical aspects of prescribing in general practice. PACT data are extremely valuable but, as with any statistical information, they have their limitations and potential pitfalls. The prescribing and cost rates given in PACT are based on the practice list size held by the Family Health Service Authority (FHSA). PACT data for individual general practitioners (GPs) relate to the prescriptions written on the GP's prescription pad or under that doctor's unique prescriber number. General practitioner electronic PACT has been designed as an electronic link system that will provide individual GP practices with their prescribing down to individual drug level on a monthly basis.
