ABSTRACT

Cord prolapse is defined once the membranes have ruptured and the cord lies in front of the presenting part (Figure 7.1). A loop of umbilical cord may descend through the cervix, either contained within the vagina (occult) or to become visible at the vulva (overt). Cord presentation is when any part of the cord lies in front of the presenting part within intact membranes. An occult presentation/ prolapse can also mean the cord is lying alongside the presenting part but is not palpable on vaginal examination.1,2 The term funic is sometimes used within literature as this describes an origin from the umbilical cord.
