One of the principal tasks of forensic psychiatrists, especially those who frequently undertake work in prisons, is the preparation of psychiatric reports for the criminal courts on mentally disordered offenders, although nearly all general psychiatrists will have to undertake such work on their own or new patients from time to time. The following account refers in particular to England and Wales, but the principles will apply elsewhere.
