ABSTRACT
The strict rules of evidence do not apply in the coroner’s court, and the coroner has discretion to admit documentary or oral hearsay evidence, if it is relevant to the questions the inquest must answer (who died, when and where they died, and how they died) or if an Article 2 European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) issue arises that involves an investigation into the wider circumstances of the deceased’s death.
