ABSTRACT

There is nothing more anxiety provoking to doctors in the United Kingdom than a letter from the General Medical Council (GMC) about a possible complaint. Yet it is surprising that few doctors understand the process of investigation, the possible adjudication, outcomes, and the data held on the website for public awareness and scrutiny. There have been many changes to the GMC over the years, with significant changes proposed to the GMC fitness to practice procedures, following two public consultations on fitness to practice procedures and on adjudication processes.1-4 At GMC meetings in 2011, there was agreement to proceed with proposals to establish the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service and to proceed with an agreed-upon modernization program for adjudication. This chapter will outline some of the procedures as they now exist.
