ABSTRACT

Rates of internalizing and externalizing psychiatric disorders are overrepresented among prison inmates,5 and an increasing number of studies provide evidence that ADHD in youth and adult offenders is widespread. These individuals are vulnerable when navigating the complex criminal justice system, and studies have reported they have greater susceptibility to police questioning and interrogation,6 higher incidents of behavioral disturbance in custody,7-9 and increased rates of health risk behaviors.10 Yet ADHD seems to be an underdiagnosed condition in the offender population, in spite of offenders’ more complex presentation, greater severity of clinical symptoms, comorbid conditions, and associated impairment.
