ABSTRACT
In 1843 Daniel McNaughten was charged with the murder of Edward Drummond, the private secretary to Sir Robert Peel, the Prime Minister. At the start of his trial, on being told to enter a plea, he said, “I was driven to desperation by persecution.”1
