ABSTRACT

Introduction What do family caregivers need from our healthcare system and from health information technology? What tools would make them more effective partners in caring for their loved ones? Until recently, these were questions that few had taken the time to ask. And yet, there are 93 million1 family caregivers today in the United States who will provide an estimated $522 billion2 in care for their loved ones (and that’s just for eldercare!). Imagine the economic impact to our healthcare system if dedicated family caregivers did not exist. And imagine the cost to family caregivers who don’t have the tools they need to manage their loved ones’ care.
