ABSTRACT

Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are dened as ‘a heterogeneous range of psychological reactions, psychiatric symptoms and behaviours occurring in people with dementia of any aetiology’ (Finkel and Burns, 2000). ey include disorders of behaviour, mood, thought content and perception, and personality alteration (Burns et al., 1990b, 1990c, 1990d, 1990e; Shah et al., 2005). e denition of any individual BPSD should be hierarchical and allow discrimination among the cognitive and other BPSD domains, dierent BPSD domains and individual symptoms within an estimated BPSD domain (Shah, 2000).
