ABSTRACT

Dementia care is a nursing speciality. It is important that the nurse has an interest in or, better still, has a passion in this area and recognizes that the journey through dementia is unique for each individual. In simple words, it is of crucial importance to make the journey as comfortable as possible. A nursing assessment is key to achieving this and should include consultation with the PWD and their family; learning their history, background, abilities and shortfalls, likes and dislikes. Keep in mind the basic human needs: nutrition, hydration, exercise, sleep, hygiene, safety and comfort and be aware that if these needs are not being met, the PWD may exhibit ‘challenging’ behaviours in order to be heard (Box 17.1).
