ABSTRACT

Table 34.1 summarises the American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations for patients with recently symptomatic carotid disease.1

Table 34.2 summarises a meta-analysis of 6000+ patients who were randomised between carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and best medical therapy (BMT) in the European Carotid Surgery Trial (ECST), the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial (NASCET) and the Veterans Aairs (VA) Trial.2 CEA conferred no benet in patients with <50% stenoses (NASCET measurement method). Maximum benet was observed with increasing internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis severity, but not subocclusion.
