ABSTRACT

It has been suggested that oxygen is the most commonly used drug globally, especially within the context of acutely unwell or deteriorating patients. Its use is often considered first line for many life-threatening or emergency clinical situations. The delivery of oxygen is not without risk, as its inappropriate use can be associated with an increased mortality and morbidity in some situations (National Patient Safety Agency, 2009). Consequently, healthcare professionals must possess the appropriate knowledge, skill and competence to safely administer oxygen therapy to patients under their care.
