ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Facial redness is a common problem encountered in the clinic with varying impacts, depending on disease severity and patient perception. It may be a minor nuisance in some patients but completely socially debilitating in others. Negative social stigmata associated with facial redness, such as the perception of excessive alcohol intake, or that of a heightened emotional state, such as embarrassment, overexcitement, or anger, motivate sufferers to seek treatment. Furthermore, unpleasant symptoms such as stinging, burning, tightness, or itching can also occur. The causes of facial redness are often multifactorial; therefore, the dermatologist’s approach must be systematic and thorough in order to maximize therapeutic success.
