ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND The rst autologous grafts of adipose tissue were carried out at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1893, Neuber [1] had already published his technique: removal of small grafts of fat from the arm (no bigger than the size of an almond), followed by transplantation on to the face. In 1911, Bruning [2] described the rst reinjection technique using a syringe to correct secondary deformities in rhinoplasty. These techniques only produced temporary results and were replaced by fatty tissue aps with vascular pedicle for grafting that proved more durable. It was not until 1950 that Peer [3] published the rst study on the autograft of adipose tissue. He found a persistence of 50% in the volume injected at a year. In 1953, Bames [4] was the rst to publish his breast augmentation technique using fat grafts in treatments for breast hypoplasia.
