ABSTRACT

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental disorder in which the affected person is excessively concerned and preoccupied by a perceived defect in his or her physical features. They are convinced of having visible defects, although most of the time these are nonexistent or only of minor importance. The sufferers may complain of several specic features or one single feature of their general appearance. They waste much time in front of the mirror in looking at themselves inquiringly; the pathologic threshold seems to be more than 1 hour per day, causing psychological distress that impairs occupational and/ or social functioning, sometimes to the point of severe depression, severe anxiety, the development of other anxiety disorders, social withdrawal or complete social isolation, and more.
