ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The axons and dendrites of peripheral nerves arise from ganglion cells lying within the ventral grey matter of the spinal cord, from brain stem nuclei, and from neurons situated within the sensory ganglia of cranial and spinal nerves and the ganglia of the autonomic nervous system and enteric plexuses. They end in synaptic contact with other neurons in the dorsal horns of the spinal cord or other sensory nuclei in the central nervous system (CNS), with autonomic ganglia or with secretory or muscular effector cells; alternatively, in the case of sensory axons, they end as free terminal arborizations or specialized terminals within a variety of encapsulated sense organs.504
