ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book talks about certain aspects of simulation in clinical education. It discusses the kind of work and routine in clinical education. The chapter presents an understanding of the kind of language associated with the classroom, it is easy to miss the similarity between the professional language one tries to develop in students of the health professions, and the kind of language that is used by teachers. Simulation – as employed in teaching – is something quite different, at one level. However, one should be aware that when one use role play to develop a medical student's communication skills, that they are using simulation to teach him or her to play the role of 'doctor' more effectively. One aspect of 'communication' which most doctors have to deal with, for instance, is teaching.
