ABSTRACT

Induction is the foundation on which any job is built and the potential to perform effectively is greatly enhanced if the induction is good. Since the Standing Committee on Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education report, published in 1993. The National Health Service has recognised the importance of this process, and induction programmes are the norm for training posts. Induction allows Pre-registration house officers to meet members of various hospital disciplines and services, and helps to orient these new doctors to their place of work. New consultants report positive benefit from attending an induction programme. This feedback has been consistent among new consultants who have attended the London Deanery 'New Consultant Day' programmes, which are held twice a year. Induction for general practice also follows the principles that have been outlined for hospital doctors, with specific processes applying to specific groups. The structure of the induction is the skeleton on which the process rests.
