ABSTRACT

Philosophy is essentially about analysing matters in detail and about getting rid of preconceived notions. This notion of path is a common metaphor therefore and is much utilised in contemplative psychology and encountered daily in such existentialist expressions as spiritual journey, journeying, maintaining a journal, enlightened way and spiritual path. Thus paths and ways are referred to as essential aspects of the pursuit of religious and spiritual development, notions well recognised by moral philosophers and moral theologians. The father starts his tale by stating that he is standing in the middle of a path and contemplating his unknown future. The concept of a path or way or road is heavily loaded with spiritual and developmental significance. The road less travelled can be a hard road but one not automatically to be considered insurmountable or to be even avoided at all cost.
