ABSTRACT

Uganda was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register a drop in adult national HIV prevalence. Children have the right to good quality healthcare, including HIV/AIDS treatment and palliative care services. Globally, but particularly in resource-constrained settings, the terminal care needs and services for children with life-threatening illnesses are poorly understood and poorly developed. The clinical officers and nurses have all completed a nine-month palliative care training programme which qualifies them to prescribe morphine in Uganda, in keeping with the Ugandan Ministry of Health protocol. The hospice is supplied with a selection of drugs from the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines. In November 2007 the Ugandan Ministry of Health issued statistics showing that over 100000 children are living in Uganda with HIV/AIDS. The clinical officers and nurses have all completed a nine-month palliative care training programme which qualifies them to prescribe morphine in Uganda, in keeping with the Ugandan Ministry of Health protocol.
