ABSTRACT

The hand and wrist consist of 29 bones, 29 joints and 29 tendons and muscles. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy in the body. Ganglion is the most common cause of a lump on the wrist. This commonly arises from the joint itself when a small rent in the joint lining (synovium) forms a little pouch. Trigger finger/thumb causes clicking and locking of the involved digit. There is usually an underlying tenosynovitis of tendon sheath which causes it to thicken. Sometimes, it may be permanently locked down. Quervain's disease tendinosis and tenosynovitis of the tendons affecting the first extensor compartment. This can cause pain and swelling around the thumb. The carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ) of the thumb is a very mobile joint that connects the trapezium and the thumb metacarpal. This allows movements like gripping and pinching. This also means that it is at a high risk of developing osteoarthritis.
