ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to enable primary care staff to build research ideas into an application for funding from a greater understanding of the research process. It provides awareness among primary care staff of the potential for obtaining funding for research activity. The chapter examines skills in recognising good and bad practice in writing a research proposal. It also provides the reader through the steps of the research process. The chapter looks at the context of funding for health services research in the UK and provides a framework to illustrate the main types of research funding available. It gives the reader some insights into the experience of applying and not always getting research funds. The chapter details sources that the reader may find useful when considering applying for research funds. It also details those working in primary healthcare, a starting point for applying for research funds.
