ABSTRACT
Chemical mechanical polishing or planarisation (CMP) is defined as the process of smoothing surfaces through a combination of chemical and mechanical forces. It is most commonly used in the semiconductor industry, where its introduction in the late 1980s and early 1990s was met with resistance as it can be considered to be a dirty process due to it involving abrasives and subsequently generating particles in the process.
