ABSTRACT

Introduction

Road traffic statistics from the National Police Agency (2010) indicate that the number of traffic accident fatalities in Japan has been decreasing; however, the reduction rate differs by accident type. The number of car-related accident deaths has decreased by 58.68 per cent in the past decade in Japan, whereas bicycle-related deaths have only decreased by 32.66 per cent. Bicycle riding is an environmentally friendly mode of transportation and it is beneficial to the riders' health. In Japan, bicycle riding is very popular, especially for shopping and commuting. Therefore, it is important to determine the cause of bicycle-related accidents and to implement effective interventions.
