ABSTRACT

Introduction

The number of traffic fatalities in which elderly car drivers (65 years old and over) are at fault remains constant even though the number of such accidents for all drivers, regardless of age, has decreased in Japan. Elderly drivers cause many collisions at unsignalised intersections (Ikeda et al., 2004), small and mid-sized intersections (ITARDA, 2000), and intersections with stop signs (Oxley et al., 2006). Most of these accidents are head-on collisions and right-turn accidents (cars drive on the left in Japan). However, surprisingly few researchers have investigated elderly driver performance in residential areas. Therefore, this research focuses on the driving behaviour of elderly drivers at these types of risky intersections.
