ABSTRACT

Introduction

This chapter describes our thoughts on the nature of everyday driving, with a particular emphasis on the processes that govern driver behaviour in familiar, well-practised situations. Based on consideration of established models of driver behaviour and an initial study of proceduralized driving in a driving simulator we describe how drivers' vehicular control and attention to road features are modified with repeated exposure. We have called this approach a 'tandem model' as it includes both explicit and implicit processes involved in driving performance.
