ABSTRACT
Introduction
This chapter describes two recent projects undertaken to establish self-explaining road (SER) hierarchies on existing streets in an urban and a suburban area. In order to be cost-effective and be appropriate to local considerations the projects made maximum use of road characteristics already present (in other words, endemic features) and relied heavily on community participation during the design process.
