ABSTRACT

Introduction

Drivers may exhibit various behaviours that greatly increase their likelihood of crash involvement. One group of such behaviours is often referred to as aggressive driving. This term is neither precise nor consistently applied (Dula and Geller, 2003), but the label is popular and was added to the PsycINfO Thesaurus in 2004. Aggressive driving thus invokes Justice stewart's famous remark about pornography (Gerwitz, 1996): It is difficult to define but easily recognized. Examples of driving behaviours that researchers routinely classify as aggressive include: tailgating, speeding, running red lights, and failing to yield to other vehicles.
