ABSTRACT

This chapter presents intervention options for the aviation population. It describes a military mishap intervention that addresses the needs of a number of impacted populations and enhances aircrew resources. Studies show that early preventative psychological intervention may prevent the worsening of legitimate and expected symptoms and shorten their duration, thus facilitating the rehabilitation process and the return to functioning. The intervention is designed to keep aircrew from becoming dependent on external resources, to prevent prolongation of symptoms and relies upon internal resources and self-help techniques applied by survivors. The Continuity Principle is primarily an organizational principle that refers to the fact that a disaster is experienced as a deep fracture within the daily routine and violates the balance and continuity of different aspects of life. According to H. Omer and N. Alon, following a disaster, ''management and treatment should aim at preserving and restoring functional, historical, and interpersonal continuities, at the individual, family, organization, and community levels.’’
