Introduction

The first section of this book focuses on the evolution of cognitive systems engineering (CSE). Interviews with Dick Pew, Neville Moray, and Tom Sheridan provide an exceptional opportunity to understand how early work in cognitive human factors provided the foundation that supported the rise of CSE as a field. This early work included researchers with a focus on cognitive psychology, even before it was called that, using concepts from control engineering to model important constructs such as attention, information processing, and human performance, as well as researchers and practitioners concerned with modeling human performance on vigilance and psychomotor tasks directly relevant to the effectiveness of sonar operators in submarines and pilots flying aircraft.
