ABSTRACT
This initial discussion then serves as a lead-in to a more detailed consideration of labels such as “compliance” and “overreliance” as they have been applied to the impact of brittle technologies on human performance. This broader focus emphasizes the need to understand joint human–machine systems in terms of the interplay of the task and broader environmental context with the design of a new technology (cognitive tool) and its impacts on the cognitive processes of the human operator(s). In this discussion, models based on attention, perception, memory, and problem-solving processes are outlined, along with consideration of design solutions that support these cognitive processes more effectively.
