As work system technologies grow more complex and they evolve from user-tool combinations to sociotechnical systems consisting of multiple users, tools, and multiple interactions, the pretense that the impact on work will be negligible ceases to hold and work design must be carefully considered in tandem with the technology design as to maintain performance, safety, and transparency through all facets of the system design. The future of technology design, especially for safety critical applications, will also require work redesign that may not be technology centric, including the creation of new procedures, or new requirements for personnel or training for existing staff.
