ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how the work domain analysis (WDA) phase of the cognitive work analysis (CWA) method can be used to design a rotary wing head-up display (HUD) solution to address the problem of landing in a DVE. It also demonstrates that this HUD enhanced situation awareness and had a positive impact on workload, although it has been acknowledged that there are areas where the HUD can be enhanced to facilitate performance even further. The provision of HUDs has the potential to increase helicopter operations by allowing them to fly in DVEs and may also have utility in good visual conditions in order to enhance the safety of helicopter operations. The HUD was evaluated in a flight simulator. The subjective ratings of situation awareness parameters and workload indicate that the HUD led to improvements in awareness and decreased workload. It was also demonstrated that the HUD could be beneficial even in clear visual conditions.
