ABSTRACT

This chapter develops an understanding and explicit representations of how a submarine returns to periscope depth. Cognitive work analysis (CWA) comprises five main phases: work domain analysis (WDA), control task analysis (ConTA), strategies analysis (StrA), social organisation and cooperation analysis (SOCA) and worker competencies analysis (WCA), each focusing on different constraint sets and presenting different perspectives on the system. WDA identifies the functional constraints on the activity of the system. As such, WDA provides the foundation for all of the subsequent phases. Whole system analysis of activities involved in returning to periscope depth in the control room using CWA has shown how six sets of constraints may be mapped out in terms of functions, situations, decisions, strategies, roles and competencies. The CAT or decision ladder can be used as a basis for eliciting the StrA required. The chapter presents the chosen goal, target states and tasks for the right-hand leg of the decision ladder.
