ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book suggests that the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology is a good starting point but needs to be developed to include emotional reactions of drivers, weighting of the constructs and model reliability issues. It proposes a new theoretical model of acceptance. The book develops the Technology Acceptance Model with a new 'trust in device' element and then combined it with a model appropriate for when an in-vehicle device provides feedback to the driver. It explores a range of self-reported measures, driver performance measures and physiological measures. The book focuses on usability aspects of acceptance and shows that usability, at least, can be measured and that such measurement can be standardised. It highlights the importance of driver acceptance of new technology and with a general agreement that acceptance is a variable rather than a binary concept.
