ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how focus groups and questionnaires can be used to measure acceptability of new vehicle technologies. Case studies are also presented to exemplify the implementation of each approach in the measurement of acceptability. Some aspects of acceptability may be better suited to examination through either questionnaires or focus groups. Once it has been decided which approach would be most appropriate for measuring acceptability, attention can turn to making decisions regarding the composition of the participant sample and the design of the data collection instrument itself. Questionnaires provide a systematic means through which to collect information about individuals' knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and behaviour. Questionnaires and focus groups can be powerful tools for gauging the acceptability of new vehicle technologies. A key to the success of focus groups is the composition of the groups, the number of participants in each group and the number of groups.
