ABSTRACT

International comparisons of healthcare systems show that the Swiss health system is considered high performing. The Swiss Patient Safety Foundation (SPSF) develops and implements national programs in line with the Swiss Confederation's quality strategy and is active in research, education, and other projects. The Breakthrough Collaborative model, developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), is a structured approach in which multidisciplinary teams from various facilities, working in parallel, join in applying evidence-based best practice through a multimodal change concept in a defined area of care. The goal of the Safe Surgery Program, conducted between 2012 and 2015, was systematic implementation of the surgical checklist, improving the quality of implementation, the safety climate, and team communication. The adverse drug event (ADE) collaborative took place over 2011 and 2012. It aimed to reduce drug events, and featured seven one-day workshops during implementation and three more post-implementation to facilitate cross-learning between professions and hospitals, and to provide input from experts.
