ABSTRACT

Health for all, or universal health coverage (UHC), aims to provide accessible, affordable, and appropriate health services for all citizens in any part of the country, regardless of their socioeconomic status, or class to which they belong. The Indian government, intent on establishing UHC, is working to get the support of private healthcare providers and insurance companies. The Indian government has a huge healthcare infrastructure by way of primary health centers (PHCs) and community health centers (CHCs) in rural regions. About 70" of outpatient department (OPD) and 60" of inpatient department (IPD) services are being catered for by private sector, which is mainly present in urban areas. There are also pan-India insurance schemes run by central government. One such scheme, Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), launched in 2008, covers below the poverty line (BPL) households across India, providing a maximum 30,000 rupees per annum for most diseases that require hospitalization, and allowing beneficiaries to choose between public or private hospitals.
