ABSTRACT

Members of various emergency management teams simply cannot do their jobs and assume others will come along at some point to do theirs. Instead their knowledge and efforts must be integrated to deliver effective emergency management outcomes. Leadership has been identified as a key variable in the functioning of a team's success or breakdown. Leaders serve as coordinators of operations, as liaisons to external teams or management. This chapter focuses on the supportive teamwork behaviours observed and in particular the ways in which Team Leaders engaged in team feedback/coaching. It contributes knowledge of the role of the leader in facilitating information sharing and seeking within hierarchical teams and between teams needing to coordinate across disciplinary boundaries. In Boundary Crossing the focus is on meeting the information needs and concerns of other teams operating within the emergency management arrangements and other external stakeholders.
