ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors review the taxonomy proposed by Wilson and her colleagues. They expand the existing taxonomy to further address why fratricide occurs and specifically addresses incidents caused by failures in teamwork. The authors mitigate the likelihood of incidents and the severity of its consequences through both formal and informal training strategies. Specifically, a number of learning strategies have proven valid and reliable at improving team effectiveness in the complex environments. Several formal and informal strategies that can be used to reduce the risk of teamwork breakdowns on the battlefield. The authors provide a number or research-based principles to support the use of the formal and informal learning strategies. The flexible architecture of scenario-based training helps to build expertise and response repertoires that are crucial when making decisions under extreme stress. One instructional strategy, stress exposure training (SET), is available to provide troops with strategies to manage the stress and maintain performance.
