ABSTRACT

The reality of any armed conflict is the possible yet evitable incidence of friendly fire casualties, commonly referred to as fratricide. Aircraft have Identify Friend or Foe (IFF) systems on board and some ground vehicles are equipped with Enhanced Position Location and Reporting System (EPLRS) radios; both are designed to identify aircraft and vehicles as friendly. Weather, darkness, terrain, and visual obscurants affect the ability to locate and identify friendly or enemy combat vehicles. The action plan coordinates and directs service schools' efforts to resolve recognized shortfalls in TTP products relating to the prevention of fratricide on the battlefield. The U. S. Army has made great strides in the development of situational awareness tools to give commanders a digital picture of the battlefield. As indicated earlier, a purpose of this chapter is to advocate for the enhancement of the FBCB2 BLUFOR Tracker capabilities with the addition or implementation of tracking capability for individual dismounted Soldiers.
