ABSTRACT

This chapter describes an initial empirical model of team collaboration emphasizing the macrocognitive processes that humans use. The initial model development began with a synthesis of the literature in team collaboration, human information processing and team communication together with the results obtained during the annual Office of Naval Research workshops on Collaboration and Knowledge Management. Rawling's Team Wise Collaboration theory discussed the key requirements for effective team collaboration along with the necessary interplay between tasks and teams. The model consists of general inputs, collaboration stages and cognitive processes. The cognitive processes include the metacognitive and the macrocognitive processes. Also described are the communication activities for enabling the Meta and macrocognitive processes. The Non-combatant Evacuation Operation scenario is planned and executed by the Operation Planning Team (OPT) at the United States Pacific Command (PACOM). The OPT is responsible for planning all military operations in the PACOM theater of operations.
