ABSTRACT

Twenty-first century organizations are constantly adapting and changing in order to remain competitive. The root driver of this change in many organizations is the complexity and dynamism of the operating environment. This chapter defines Macrocognition and describes a few of the complexities of measuring this cognitive process. Reflecting the process side of macrocognition are the latter two dimensions: individual and team knowledge-building processes. The chapter provides practitioners with a brief set of initial guidelines to assist in navigating the complexity of performance diagnosis, development, and training of teams operating in complex problem solving environments. In developing or implementing any measure designed to assess a component of macrocognition in context, five fundamental challenges are often faced by practitioners: what to measure, when and from whom to collect the information, what tools to use, how to get useful responses and how to index the responses.
