ABSTRACT

Medication plays a key role in modern health care, and most medication is supplied in primary care organisations such as general practices, community pharmacies and care homes. In England alone, over 1 billion prescription items were issued in primary care during the previous year (HSCIC, 2013). Therefore, medicines management (that is, the range of activities that ensure safe and effective medicines usage) has been identified as an area that has a significant impact on the quality and safety of health care in general. In this chapter, we consider the challenge of managing medicines management in primary care, and what insights can be gained by applying the notion of organisational resilience to service providers in this setting.
