ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the relevance of adaptive coordination in anaesthetic work and presents the approach to measuring team coordination behaviour in anaesthesia. The induction of anaesthesia is particularly demanding compared to the other tasks involved in the anaesthetic process. The objective of the research on anaesthetic team coordination is to gain a broad perspective of anaesthetic team behaviour coordination during routine and non-routine and relate it to clinical performance. As L. R. Weingart concluded, gaining knowledge regarding what anaesthetic teams actually do, how they complete their work and the resulting levels of success increased our understanding of which processes influence group performance, specifically clinical effectiveness. The context of anaesthetic teamwork usually includes highly structured organizations and the necessity to be attentive to a range of tasks. Anaesthesia is characterized by routine as well as by non-routine procedures in the sense of rapidly shifting priorities.
