ABSTRACT

A rectangular Baltistan palace plan type, with a unique and matchless half octagonal entrance wooden tower, is constructed of stone masonry, reinforced with timber members and rendered in mud plaster manifest the traditional wisdom of building structures. The conservation project not only contributed in reviving the traditional construction and craft techniques but also provided an opportunity in revitalizing the values associated with built heritage. The main palace building, posed serious challenges in being founded on cultural fill with the bearing strata in full access of a basement space. The overall building super structure was in deteriorated condition which was opened up in different phases systematically and strengthen structure particularly the walls by providing them both vertical and horizontal wooden bracing. Vernacular character of the site and the presence of several historic buildings, fruit orchards, and old settlements in the vicinity create an exceptional setting.
