ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to contribute to the body of practical and philosophical knowledge for conserving modern buildings. Recognition of the cultural significance of twentieth century architectural heritage is improving there is a lack of practical conservation knowledge and philosophy that addresses the complex challenges that modern buildings pose. The capacity of the structure to resist the force of gravity, and the detailing of the roof and drainage were the major issues faced soon after the building's completion. The roofing system of the Kresge Auditorium highlights a number of key issues that are characteristic of buildings of the modern movement. The structural concrete dome of the Kresge Auditorium is a soaring visionary form that seems to float weightlessly on three points, and is the centerpiece of the building. The Kresge Auditorium represents the early phase of structurally expressive and sculptural modern buildings.
