ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the facade condition and presents specific conclusions about the existing condition of residential buildings in the blocks of New Belgrade. The elements of facade envelopes are designed only as carried elements which rely on the bearing structure. During the period from late 1950s until the 1980s, concrete was a prevailing material for bearing structures and facade envelopes. Being a newly built residential settlement of the Serbian capital - Belgrade, New Belgrade is selected as a fine example of the use of prefabricated construction. The bearing wall units were made as cast in-situ, floor constructions were produced as prefabricated ribbed reinforced concrete slabs, and facade parapets were envisaged as prefabricated. The use of ceramic tiles as facade finish also presents one of the interesting ways of facade design throughout the construction period of New Belgrade.
