ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the protective works and reconstruction of the old Throne Hall building in the capital of the Nubian Kingdom of Makuria, Old Dongola in northern Sudan. It presents the original design for protective and strengthening works and its modification due to local restrictions on available technology. Structural timber is in various conditions, depending of the age and type of the wood. Timber elements are very simple and randomly collected. Floors over the upper level are made of timber elements - both beams and stumps are covered with reed stems and pugging. Making the building available for tourism requires strengthening of the floors, construction of a new roof structure the existing one and strengthening of the stairs. The Throne Hall is an independent building, located on a hill approximately four hundred meters to the southwest of the Citadel, and dominates the surrounding terrain.
