ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the main problems of the timber buildings that have been investigated in the Bosporus area in the terms. It aims to display the difficulties that have to be braced during the assessment and the results of the mechanical tests including flexural and compressive strength carried out on the timber samples taken from different buildings with various health conditions in order to make a conclusion for an assessment method. Periodical monitoring and maintenance is a necessity for timber buildings to prevent severe damage and problems. In the case of timber buildings, the difficulties eventually arise while determining the degree of interventions that should be defined in the conservation project. The walls of the timber frame are covered with timber panels on the exterior and plastered over lath in the interior. Deflection of timber floors is seen at the buildings that the structural conditions are visually evaluated as medium.
